寒帯展示で見るペンギンと気候の違い

海遊館の寒帯系展示では、ペンギンの姿を通じて太平洋を取り巻く気候の幅を実感できます。熱帯の魚やサンゴ礁と同じ順路の中に寒い水辺の環境が置かれていることで、海が単一の青い空間ではなく、温度、光、餌、生息地によって大きく異なることがわかります。

ペンギンを見るときは、陸上での立ち姿だけでなく、水中での動きにも注目したいところです。歩いているときのぎこちなさと、水中で方向転換する速さの差は大きく、体の形が泳ぐために最適化されていることを直感的に理解できます。

子ども連れには人気の高い場所ですが、前列に長く留まりすぎないよう注意しましょう。少し後ろから全体を見たほうが、個体同士の距離、岩場の使い方、水面と陸地の行き来が見えやすくなります。
